Nikon Created a giant killer! January 8, 2009 I have recently purchased the new D90 from Nikon and can honestly say this new camera is one of the best I have ever used. I was looking originally to upgrade my Nikon D200 to the new Nikon D300 and stumbled upon the new D90. I currently have a Nikon D200, D70s, D40x and a whole bunch of Nikon Glass and Flashes, all of which are completely interchangeable with this new camera! I must say that I feel that Nikon has created a giant killer (the competition, especially for Canon). When you pick the unit up you will experience a well thought out and engineered product (you should always go to a brick and mortar store to try out a camera first for proper fit in hands, feel, aesthetics, etc.). Some people have complained that the D90 is too small for their hands. I am a really big guy who has big hands and though the unit is small in my hands, it is still comfortable to use and does not feel like a plastic throw-a-way like the Canons. I have added the MB-D80 Hand Grip to the D90 for additional surface area and better controls (plus additional battery capacity) and the unit feels just as good as my larger D200 which also has the MB-D200 Hand Grip for similar reasons.
Regarding the D90's exceptional features, you will not go wrong here. The camera can serve both as a new bee unit for someone starting out or for a pro/enthusiast like myself with extremely fast shutter speeds, good 11 point focus area, and the real killer is the 720P HD Video capture capability...pure cream! I am sure glad I did not spend the extra money on the D300 as the reviews of the D90 are just as good as if not better than the D300...all for a camera costing a good $900.00 less!
All-in-all, a very good investment here for anyone wanting a very excellent, fast, and fun DSLR!
great camera, found 2 dead pixels January 6, 2009 It's a great camera, i don't complain, great built and it feels good in your hand. Image quality it's what i expected. the kit lenses are flexible and sharp, not complains at all... but i recently founded 2 dead pixels in every picture, and i read that it's a normal thing in this body, not very happy with that.
Wow! Never, never buy a point and shoot again... January 4, 2009 Fanboy: I know the price is more then a point and shoot - but you get what you pay for. Having owned a digital camera since 1999, and those all bring little point and shoot clicker - I have accumulated around 7000 digital pictures before I bought this camera in Nov 09. I now have around 10000! In 3 months I have almost taken half the amount that I took in 9 years!
Good: The image quality is outstanding. The camera body is hefty enough to feel strong buy not to heavy to use for long periods of time. Built in flash works like a champ. Battery lasts FOREVER - I think we charge weekly and shoot pictures almost everyday!
Bad(If you could call it that): Lens is a built to "multitasking" - Does a bunch of things good - Not 1 thing great. Steep - steep learning curve if you want to learn and use every feature. Camera sometime freezes causing a battery removal. This happens few and far between.
I couldn't recommend this more.

Two day after after receiving a notice that my order had been shipped from Hobby Warehouse 1, I received an email: "We have cancelled your Amazon.com order because the seller informed us that it was placed against an unauthorized listing." The refund was delayed to my next month billing period on my credit card. How can they take my money and 2 days later tell me the ad was fake? I am sure the D90 is a great camera, but I did not receive one from my order on Amazon.
Photography is fun again January 1, 2009 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
For some time now I have gotten by with a compact camera with a small sensor that would take fine pictures if you had all day to wait for the thing to start up, listen to the motor whine as the lens zooms in and out to frame the shot, and wait for two more intervals for the camera to focus, expose and record the picture before being ready for the next picture. All that is gone. The D90 is fast. It lets you fire the camera up, frame, focus, and shoot as quickly and often times more quickly than the old film-type SLR's. It is so fast to expose I can easily catch things in mid-air which was something I could do only by sheer luck with the smaller camera. If you are a former film-SLR photographer as I am, the fundamentals of exposure for movement and depth of field are easily implemented with intuitive and convenient controls and menus. My other camera is a Canon G3 and I was concerned that I might suffer confusion between the two cameras but the Nikon is quick to learn and I now prefer it. While the D90 with an 18-105mm lens is relatively large and heavy, it fits nicely in the hands and feels like a real instrument. The 18-105 lens hits the sweet spot for focal lengths, going from wide angle to moderate telephoto and while I had thought that I might need to get a 55-200mm lens I'm not sure I will need it unless a very special need for a longer lens comes along. The viewfinder is excellent and I am glad to be back to using one but the high resolution LCD backpanel is a joy to behold and wonderful for reviewing shots and in live mode for videos. I have had the camera for a month and have gone picture-crazy with it including our Christmas vacation. Pictures are uniformly sharp and beautifully exposed with the usual foibles in tricky or low light situations that are difficult for any camera. Performance with the built-in flash and with an external SB-600 is as close to flawless as one could expect and better than any other camera I have used. Finally, the ease of switching over and capturing great video is outstanding. The 30 frames per second capture rate produces smooth, well exposed video. I have seen criticism that the automatic focus does not work in video mode which is true. You focus initially and start the video and the focus stays there but you can use the zoom. I have not found the focus issue to be a big problem because the videos I take do not typically go from distant to close focus but it is an option to use the manual focus ring which does work in video mode. All in all, what can I say? Photography is fun again.
If I had a gripe, it would be that some cameras like the Canon open a new folder in memory for pictures taken on different days and the Nikon does not. This is very handy to organize pictures if the camera is used over a period of days before downloading the shots to a computer. One other niggle is that the camera does not shut down automatically if it is not used for a period of time. Battery life is qood, by the way, but not so good if you forget to turn it off. Otherwise, I love the camera and while it is not cheap, it is actually a good buy for the features. In default mode this camera takes pictures that average 3.1 MB in size so lots of hard disk space and a capable computer are recommended.
